Top School Districts in Illinois, 2018

When discussing the best states in the U.S. to raise kids, there’s a strong argument to be had for Illinois, as Chicago area suburbs boast some of the best public school districts in the country, by any measure. Academic achievement, generous funding, superb athletic programs, and great extracurricular activities are all attributes shared by most districts in the region.

Illinois’ best school district is Naperville Community Unit School District 203, which serves central Naperville and parts of Bolingbrook and Lisle in Dupage County. Naperville Central High School, one of District 203’s two high schools, has been listed in U.S. News and World Report’s list of the top high schools in America, while 203’s Meadow Glens Elementary was named a Blue Ribbon School in 2015.

Morton Community Unit School District 709, located in Morton, IL, is Illinois’ second highest ranked school district. Comprising four elementary schools, one junior high and one high school, Morton District 709 schools have repeatedly received medals for their achievements from US News & World Reports, and its students average an ACT composite score 2.5 points higher than the statewide average.

Third in the ranking is Wauconda Community Unit School District 118 serving Wauconda (not to be confused with Wakanda, the fictional African nation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), and other communities in Lake County.

Dunlap Community Unit School District 323 (#4) serving Peoria County, and Barrington Community Unit School District 220 (#5), which earned the highest financial rating in the state, round out the top five.

Top School Districts in Indiana, 2018

The Hoosier State has plenty of excellent school districts located in some great, family-friendly communities. Interestingly, children in Indiana don’t have to enter school until the age of seven, but when they do begin classes, they are sure to be well-served by the districts on this list.

Indiana’s best school district is Carmel Clay School Corporation, a system of 15 schools serving Carmel and Clay Township, IN. The district’s high level of achievement has resulted in AdvancED accreditation, and a number of Blue Ribbon School awards for its elementary schools.

The second position in the ranking belongs to West Lafayette Community School Corporation, a smaller system of three schools serving West Lafayette, IN. Remarkably, WLCSC is ranked nationally in the top 1% for sTEM Education.

Third place belongs to Zionsville Community School Corporation, which serves Zionsville, IN, a northwestern suburb of Indianapolis. The district began the “Strong in Every Way” program in 2016 to provide ZCS students in need with adult mentors as a means of encouragement and in order to help develop their non-cognitive skills.

Ranked fourth is the Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation, serving the communities of Fishers and Noblesville, IN. One of its schools, Geist Elementary School, was named a Blue Ribbon School in 2016.

Closing out the top five is Brownsburg Community School Corporation, located in Brownsburg, IN. BCSC students excel in state test scores, with 88% of students achieving proficiency in math, and 86% hitting the mark in reading.

Top School Districts in Alaska, 2018

Despite it’s far flung geographical location, America’s largest and least densely populated state is not without its excellent school districts serving towns and boroughs in a number of regions.

Alaska’s top school district is Wrangell Public School District, serving Wrangell City and Borough in the southwest part of the state. Comprising one elementary school, middle school, and high school, Wrangell Public School’s forward looking vision statement promises to “foster and encourage all students to achieve their potential within an increasingly global society.”

Unalaska City School District is the number two ranked school system in the state. A small district of just one elementary school and one high school, UCSD serves Unalaska, the largest city in the Aleutian Islands and home to Dutch Harbor, one of the largest fishery ports in the United States.

We head north to Denali Borough for #3 on the list, Denali Borough School District. DBSD is notable for its Career and Technical Education programs that apply unique learning approaches with the aim of setting students on a career path that interests them.

#4 Petersburg City School District serves Petersburg, a borough located near the home of the state’s top ranked school district, Wrangell, Alaska.

Closing out the top five is Haines Borough School District, which encompasses schools in both the city and borough of Haines. Its sole elementary school, Haines Elementary School, was named a National Blue Ribbon School for the school year of 2014-2015.

Top School Districts in Arizona, 2018

Students in Arizona not only get to enjoy year-round warm weather (making for great recess periods), but are also afforded an excellent education. You might imagine that the top school districts in the state would all be based within the Phoenix metropolitan area, however, among the top ten there is a balanced distribution representing several regions of the state.

Of the ten highest ranked school districts in Arizona, three are located in Pima County (whose county seat, Tucson, is the state’s second largest city), five are within the Greater Phoenix Area, and two are based in Apache County located in the northeastern portion of the state. Gilbert, a fast growing city of over 200,000 in the Phoenix area, owns the distinction of being home to two districts in the top ten.

Arizona’s best school district is Gilbert Unified Public School District, serving the aforementioned city of Gilbert in Maricopa County. 11 of GUSD’s 27 elementary schools, 6 junior highs, and five high schools have been named A+ Schools of Excellence by the Arizona Educational Foundation.

Second in the ranking is Dysart Unified School District, which serves parts of several cities in the Northwest Phoenix Metro area. The nationally recognized district regularly exceeds averages in graduation rate and standardized testing.

We move south to a suburban community of Tucson for third-ranked Tanque Verde Unified School District, whose sole high school--Tanque Verde High School--was featured in US News and World Report’s 2017 Best High Schools in America list.

#4 St. Johns Unified School District and #5 Round Valley Unified School District are two fine districts serving parts of Apache County, home to more Indian reservation land than any other U.S. county.
